There is a saying on the boat; that you never piss off the DOC, yeomen, and the cooks.
I would like to say thank you for the acknowledgement of the cooks, because for the most part we are hardly ever mentioned. We are the heart & soul of the boat and we strive to do our best with what we got. 😎

Well produced, but the title is wrong.

It does not explain how submarines work.

I think it takes a rare kind of seaman to be able to work on a sub! First of all, they're rather claustrophobic machines, and there is not much room for failure down deep with all that pressure! I don't think I would like 3 months in a tube where you can't see a lot, always being aware of crush depth! The sea floor is not flat, there are mountains down there, some higher than Mt. Everest, and I'd always be wondering if the sonar was adequate! The camaraderie those men have would be very nice though. Bravo to them all!

@Hedley Lamarr I did NOT know it was a voluntary service! But it makes sense. I'd bet they are paid more then the usual seaman, at least I certainly hope so. Hope he found something satisfactory to do after an exciting venture like being a missile tech. We thank him for his service.

My older brother was on the SSBN-658 for 6 years. It is a volunteer job, meaning you are not just put on a sub. You need years of schooling, and be able meet strict evaluations. He was a Missile Tech for the Poseidon system. People tend to worry about radiation off the warheads or reactor. But basically, you get less radiation exposure than you would being top side in the Sun.

Considering the range we have to cover, our Aussie subs are shitbuckets compared to US and Russia. Ours are like sardine cans compared to the 44gal drums they have as far as crewing and size. You could never pay me enough to serve on Australian subs!
