I bet the California and Texas reps gave themselves the subway building and left the plebs to the tunnel building

There's a tunnel in Nashville as well that connects the state house to legaslative plaza across the street, runs under Charlotte Pike. Legaslative plaza looks really nice at street level, its a marble plaza with fountains, the war Memorial auditorium, but underneath its a damp, moldy, smelly poorly lit basement where our state reps and senators have their offices. Basically serves the same function as the tunnels/subways in DC, turns our state congressmen into vampires and mole people so they can go to their windowless office to the windowless house/senate chambers without seeing the light of day.

There are actually even crazier reasons that the congressional subways exist.

My favorite is that the Sergeant at Arms of the House and Sergeant at Arms of the Senate can be directed to bring a congressional representative to the floor by the speaker of the house or president of the senate respectively. This has historically been done when a minority party tried to obstruct business by preventing quorum. They did this by either not answering present despite being there, being in the lobby, or being in their office instead of in the capitol.

However, the jurisdiction of the Sergeant at Arms of each branch is limited to the capitol buildings. That includes these tunnels and subways but not the entire path above ground that connects these buildings. So, in order to carry out an order to collect a representative, they need to work with the capital police if it involves leaving the capitol. It is much easier if they can avoid that step.

                                                                          • Dillon Arboneaux

I worked in Congress for a senior member; most offices have 10 or so staffers in them, with the rest in their various district offices. Members get a budget to allocate for staff so 45 is a bit extreme. Senators have larger offices than Congressmen, too. Also the subway is a security thing, as are the tunnels. Members walk a lot through them since above ground could expose them to danger. Plus it's just faster than walking through tourists.
